Researchers from University College London have achieved a groundbreaking advancement in 6G wireless data transmission, reaching astonishing speeds of 938 gigabits per second (Gbps). That’s roughly 9,000 times faster than today’s typical 5G connections! At this rate, users could download more than 20 movies per second, marking a giant leap forward for future Internet performance.

The team, led by Professor Zhixin Liu, reached this extraordinary speed by leveraging a completely new frequency spectrum that has never been tested before. They operated in the 5 GHz to 150 GHz range and utilized a unique combination of radio waves and light for data transmission, which allowed them to surpass previous speed limits.
Professor Liu described the breakthrough as turning a narrow one-lane road into a massive ten-lane highway. "Just as we need wider roads to allow more cars to pass, we need more bandwidth to transmit more data," he explained.
How Did They Do It?
The success of this record-breaking speed stems from using two advanced technologies:
- High-speed electronics: Utilizing fast digital-to-analog converters, the team generated signals in the 5-75 GHz range.
- Microwave photonics: For even higher frequencies, such as W-band (75-110 GHz) and D-band (110-150 GHz), the researchers mixed light-based signals with lasers that were frequency-locked. This approach produced an efficient system capable of supporting next-generation wireless communication.

The team is actively discussing collaborations with smartphone manufacturers and network providers to bring this technology to consumers soon, paving the way for future 6G networks that will redefine how we use the internet.
