Qualcomm explains the name change to the new Snapdragon

A few days ago, the new top chipset from Qualcomm finally saw the light of day, which of course has only the highest ambitions. However, the creators decided to change the established naming scheme for their chipsets, so the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 looks pretty stubborn at first glance. After all, we were used to clearly given names, from which it was possible to read the performance classification of the processor. It was so clear that the Snapdragon 888 is more powerful than the Snapdragon 870. The novelty turns this whole concept on its head, but behind the change in nomenclature, of course, there is also logical reasoning and good reason.

Don McGuire, Qualacomm's vice president and chief marketing officer, also explained it to the press. As expected, this is purely a problem with a lack of numbers, as the original name Snapdragon 898 would no longer leave much room for the future. Only SD899 could become the maximum of the series and then there would be nowhere to go. So renaming was basically a necessity, and the new conventions will allow for essentially unlimited future expansion of the name. Just add generation numbers. The current fans are just gossiping, but it won't take long and they will quickly get used to the new terminology.

The company will also easily change the entire global naming of its chipsets. According to their research, most mobile phone fans know the name Snapdragon very well , but not the name of the author's company itself. In the future, the prefix Qualcomm should disappear from the chipset name, leaving only the name of the platform itself. They have taken a similar step in China in the past, but now it should be the global market.
