Xiaomi's new patent for full screen fingerprint recognition

The technology of fingerprint recognition directly in OLED displays has been with us in phones since 2018. Recently, although an exception in the form of an OLED phone with a reader on the side has occasionally appeared , it is generally an element considered by the upper middle class as a standard. But over the years, little progress has been made, and we are still waiting for a major breakthrough. Some manufacturers have managed to increase the fingerprint recognition area, but this is obviously not enough for Xiaomi. Their new patent has much greater ambitions.

The patent was recently registered with the Chinese Patent Office and is a really interesting idea. It works with a system of infrared LED elements integrated between the OLED panel and the touch layer of the display. These miniature receivers could send the touch point and finger shape directly to the scanner itself. There, it would compare with the user's stored fingerprints and then unlock the phone. The result would be an efficient fingerprint reader over the entire surface of the display, so the user would not have to hit a specific place, as is the case now.

In August last year, they had something similar patented at Huawei, but the development of this technology was eventually stopped. And it was most likely another impact of the US embargo. Xiaomi doesn't have to worry about something like that, so they can fully throw themselves into this plan. It would really be a real leap in integrated fingerprint reader technology, and I think it was time to move on. And with Chinese companies obsessed with world championships and premieres, Xiaomi could be prestigious in this case.
