vivo X Fold+: The future of folding phones?

vivo X Fold+: The future of folding phones?

With the launch of its first folding model, the X Fold, vivo sought to draw the public into a new, more comprehensive way of using the phone and demonstrate the convenience and creative possibilities provided by the 8-inch foldable main display. Now, with the launch of its successor, the X Fold+, vivo is offering even more. The answer to what sets the X Fold+ apart is vivo's commitment to the Benfen philosophy – the Chinese concept of doing the right things in the right way. The latter is the driving force behind creating flagship folding devices that deliver interesting features and great performance. For the first generation vivo X Fold, vivo tried to ensure lifetime durability and avoid creases that form on folding displays. This also set the first X Fold model apart from the others and ensured that even onthe follow- on X Fold+ can boast lifetime durability.

The display of the vivo X Fold+ device combines a number of technologies and high-quality materials. Its design pushes the boundaries with improved hinge durability and a significantly reduced screen crease. vivo has taken care to integrate the highest quality hinge in its foldable smartphones. The mechanism was thoroughly tested by leading independent testing experts from TÜV Rheinland – Germany's renowned institution and service provider for quality and safety, who focused not only on the hinge but also on the display crease. Both elements passed more than 300,000 compositions and layouts with flying colors. Considering that the average consumer would fold and unfold the device 80 times a day, this would represent more than 10 years of continuous use.

AVIATION MATERIALS

Material and construction are key in creating a durable foldable phone. The hinge of the X Fold+ phone has 174 parts and uses six layers of aerospace materials such as liquid metal and high-strength steel. These selected materials bring increased strength, resistance to impact, bending and corrosion. To minimize creases, the vivo X Fold+ model is adapted with a floating middle plate design that holds the central crease of the screen. The screen itself can thus be flatter when unfolded, and the center plate drops down when folded, leaving enough space for safe bending of the screen. The heavy-duty floating wing hinge allows the device to close flat but also stay open at an angle of 60 to 120 degrees.

Glass is known for its stiffness and fragility, so using glass for a foldable display may seem like an unlikely choice. However, new breakthroughs in materials science require a more flexible understanding of what glass can be. The glass in the foldable main display of the X Fold+ is a masterpiece in itself, using the thinnest and most flexible glass on the market.

In order to offer device users the best quality, ultra-thin glass (UTG) was developed by vivo's partner, SCHOTT, an international technology company and leader in the field of specialty glass. Today, SCHOTT is the only company that currently mass-produces ultra-thin and ultra-flexible UTG glass that can be chemically strengthened. Thanks to its unique structure, Xensation® Flex, a special member of the SCHOTT UTG(R) family that appears in the X Fold series, can bend hundreds of thousands of times after processing and chemical hardening. Thanks to this, it has an extraordinary bending radius of less than 2 millimeters. Combined with the water drop hinge structure, which offers the best bending radius of 2.3 millimeters, the X Fold+ display fold is not only narrow, but also almost completely flat, avoiding the "bulge" that commonly occurs in folding phones.

In addition to the flexible glass inside the display, the large external display is also equipped with SCHOTT cover glass, which protects the phone from everyday pitfalls. Xensation® High Performance Cover Glass is a chemically reinforced lithium-alumino-silicon cover glass that offers the world's best impact and drop resistance. Together, these materials and technical solutions create a truly strong impression that remains throughout the device's lifetime.

X FOLD+: THE COMING FUTURE

Foldable smartphones have the prospect of changing the way phones are used in everyday life, and the XFold+ model gives a glimpse into the future. It reveals a new way of approaching smartphones and shows what needs to be done to meet evolving customer expectations. Collapsible should never compromise the display experience.

As foldable smartphones have higher color consistency requirements compared to regular smartphones, vivo X Fold+ supports 120Hz refresh rate on both internal and external displays and uses LTPO E5 Samsung AMOLED displays with 2K+ resolution to ensure image smoothness and optimized consumption energy. Together with its research centers, vivo has also developed its own color calibration scheme, so that the accuracy of color reproduction on both displays is almost identical. All this contributed to the X Fold series receiving 19 DisplayMate records and an overall A+ level certification, the current highest level in the industry.

Like its predecessor, which was the world's first foldable smartphone to feature ultrasonic fingerprint scanners on both displays, the X Fold+ has Qualcomm's dual 3D ultrasonic fingerprint scanners on both displays. In the new X Fold+, the large internal display has been improved to offer a better split-screen display. This means users can open up to two windows in the foreground and have four task apps running simultaneously with two split-screen windows and up to 12 background windows.

Charging offers faster speed thanks to 80W FlashCharge technology, so users can charge the battery from 1% to 70% in just 18 minutes. A full charge takes only 35 minutes. The X Fold+ also features the industry-leading 50W FlashCharge wireless charging, which allows for a 10% charge in 5 minutes and a full charge in 53 minutes. Doing things in the spirit of Benfen means thinking about the whole user experience, and it goes beyond the smartphone itself: that's why the new X Fold+ comes standard with an exclusive charger with a gallium nitride USB-C connector with two sockets to be able to charge several devices at once.

X FOLD+: ADDITIONAL SPECIFICATIONS

 VIVO X Fold Plus

Due to the nature of the foldable display, this new type of smartphone is changing the way users take and display photos. For example, the X Fold+ supports a viewfinder on both of its internal displays. Thanks to this, it is possible to take selfies with the main camera in maximum quality. The X Fold+ also stays true to the company's "camera first" commitment, enabling every user to get the perfect shot. As with its other flagship devices, vivo collaborated with premium optics and optoelectronics pioneer ZEISS to develop the camera system for the X Fold. The four cameras with a full focal length have 5x optical magnification and a camera with 60x digital zoom.

In terms of hardware performance, it's worth noting that the X Fold+ features an improved chipset that now works with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform, delivering up to 10% higher performance and up to 30% lower power consumption compared to Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 of its predecessor. Combined with an increase in battery capacity from 4600 to 4730 milliamps, this means users can enjoy up to two hours of video playback.
