Foldable phones have been on the market for quite some time. But the launch of this segment was not very fast, because the prices of the phones were high. Over time, however, prices began to fall, and users' interest in folding machines increased proportionally. Samsung is undoubtedly the leader in this segment, but every year its competition grows, which not only offers lower prices, but also innovations in internal and external displays, and among the main improvements recently is the modification of folding hinges. The Honor Magic Vs phone probably has the best hinges at the moment, and thanks to them, the bend in the internal display is almost invisible.
At the beginning of the year, a patent drawing of the new folding hinges that Samsung is preparing for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 phone appeared on the network. The new hinge should thus solve a certain imperfection, which is the fold on the internal display. The latter, even if it is not extremely visible, occurs at the bend of the hinge. The new folding hinge is said to be shaped like a "water drop" and will allow the phone to be folded or unfolded so that there is no gap in the bend. It is the gap at the bend that causes the folds on the internal display. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 will thus get a completely smooth and uniform internal display.
This theory sounds interesting, but Samsung also prepared a practical demonstration for its fans and professional public at CES 2023. They showed that the new hinge is thinner than the previous generation and its thickness is 14 mm. Recall that the original hinge is 15.8 mm thick. The narrowing of the hinges will therefore guarantee that the bend in the display will be almost imperceptible.
Another good news is that Samsung is already testing the new hinge. However, testing is a bit of a long shot, because according to the Korean site TheElec, it takes about five days for one prototype. The reference value for the tests is 200,000 bends, during which time the hinge must retain at least 85% of its original tightness and strength. However, there is still quite a bit of time left before the launch of the next generation of Samsung foldable phones. It is likely that Samsung will present them in the second half of this year, sometime in August/August.
