Xiaomi is really good at making strong technology. Even though you can't officially get these top phones in the US, they're just as good as the best Android phones.
We're already excited to know about the Xiaomi 14 series, which should come out in a few months. Let's talk about everything we know and what we hope to see in these phones.
We don't have official confirmation for the Xiaomi 14 series yet, but it's very likely the next set of phones after the Xiaomi 13 series from 2023. Xiaomi has been making top phones for more than 10 years and it seems like they're not going to stop.
Here are the dates when Xiaomi launched some of their previous phones:
In the past, Xiaomi's phone launches have been a bit confusing, but recently, it's become more predictable. They usually introduce their top phones in China first, around December. Then, they launch them worldwide in February or March of the next year.
We think we'll find out about the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro before the end of 2023. But it might not be available all around the world until early 2024.
Xiaomi sometimes makes it more complex because they have lots of different types of flagship phones. The Ultra model usually comes out a bit later, like in late spring or early summer. They also have other versions like Lite, T, S, and so on, that show up in different countries throughout the year. For example, we might see the Xiaomi 13T in the third quarter of 2023 before the 14 series is out.
We have a few months to go until the Xiaomi 14 comes out, but there are already rumors about some improvements.
We think these phones will use Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Xiaomi usually uses the latest processor technology, so this is likely. But we need to wait for the official details to know how much better this new generation will be.
People are saying that the Xiaomi 14 will charge faster. It might have 90W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. This means it will charge faster with a cable compared to the current model's 67W charger, which takes only 38 minutes to reach 100%. The battery could also be bigger, going up to 4,860mAh from 4,500mAh. The Xiaomi 14 Pro might still have its really fast 120W wired and 50W wireless charging, and its battery might be a bit larger at 5,000mAh.
We think some things will stay the same, like having an IP68 rating (meaning it's water and dust resistant), eSIM support (a way to use your phone plan without a physical SIM card), and the ability to record high-quality 8K videos. What could be interesting is if Xiaomi puts some of the Pro features into the regular Xiaomi 14, like the Pro's 1-inch camera sensors or a special display.
Here's how much some of the previous Xiaomi phones cost:
Xiaomi's top phones have prices that change with the value of money around the world. But there's been a bit of consistency in their prices. The regular Xiaomi 14 will probably be similar in price to its previous version, competing with the Galaxy and iPhone phones. The big question is if the phone will stay under €1,000 in Europe, where prices have been going up.
The Pro version is more expensive and costs over a thousand in every country. The Xiaomi 14 Pro will likely be similar in price to the Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro, its main competitors. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra, which might come out later, will be even more expensive and more like a luxury item than a popular choice.
The Xiaomi 13 from late 2022 might seem a bit old, but it's still a modern phone for 2023. Its features are just as good as the Samsung Galaxy S23, and its price is competitive too. The Xiaomi 14 will probably have some small improvements, but they might not be big enough to wait for if you need a new phone soon.
One reason to wait or consider other options is the software. We found that MIUI 14, the software Xiaomi uses, might not be for everyone. The next version, MIUI 15, might be similar. Also, Xiaomi's updates for their software aren't as strong as Google's or Samsung's, so those might be better options if you want software updates.
Keep in mind that the Xiaomi 13 series isn't sold officially in the US, and the 14 series probably won't be either. So, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra or Apple iPhone 14 Pro are the closest choices you can get right now.
If waiting until next year is hard, and you don't like the current phones, the Google Pixel 8 series should be out before 2023 ends, and they will likely be good choices.
The Xiaomi 13 series is already one of the best Android phones, but there's still room to make it better. Here are some things we'd like to see in the Xiaomi 14.
Simpler software: MIUI 14 can be a bit complicated. Xiaomi could make their software simpler while still being unique. Right now, there are so many menus, settings, and features that it's not easy to use. Some parts even feel more like iOS than Android, which can be confusing if you're used to other Android phones. Xiaomi could make the software more streamlined.
Better design: The Xiaomi 13 Pro looks nice, but it's not the most practical. It's heavy and thick, and the back of the phone gets smudges easily. It would be great if the Xiaomi 14 had a lighter design and more colors that don't show fingerprints as much. They could also use different materials to make the phone easier to hold.
Lower price: Everyone wants lower prices. There's a big price difference between the competitive Xiaomi 13 and the expensive Pro model. Xiaomi could try to make the 14 Pro more affordable. It might make sense to price it more like the Galaxy S24 Ultra or iPhone 15 Pro, which are its main rivals. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra will probably be even more expensive and more of a luxury item than a common buy.
