Once the leader in the foldable smartphone market, Samsung is now facing increased competition. In the second quarter of 2024, Huawei overtook Samsung to claim the top spot, thanks to the innovative Mate XT trifold display. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 has experienced slower sales, making it difficult for the company to regain its position. Competitors like Honor have also raised the stakes with the launch of the Honor Magic V2 last year, and this year’s Magic V3 has pushed the boundaries further with a thinner, more powerful design.
Despite these challenges, Samsung is preparing for a major comeback. According to reports by The Elec, the company plans to introduce a smartphone with a rollable display in 2025. This innovative device will feature a display that can be expanded or reduced based on user needs, potentially reaching a maximum size of 12.4 inches when fully extended. Additionally, the phone is expected to come with a hidden under-display camera, much like previous Galaxy Z Fold models.
Though the concept of a rollable display isn't entirely new—Samsung patented the technology three years ago—rumors of its development have been circulating since mid-2023. Chung Yi, Vice President of Samsung's Display Division, hinted at rollable screens about a month ago, and prototypes were showcased at Mobile World Congress in February, signaling that the company is working hard on this new display innovation.
With this new rollable display technology, Samsung’s future in the foldable display market looks promising. If everything goes as planned, the device may debut during the Galaxy Unpacked event in 2025, where the company typically unveils its latest foldable models. It could even be launched alongside the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7, marking a new era in smartphone innovation as Samsung works to reclaim its leadership in the competitive foldable market.
