Apple says motorcycle shocks could damage iPhone cameras

If you have an iPhone fitted to your motorcycle and are traveling on the highway, you may want to rethink it. On Friday Apple said that some motorcycle engines can give a bad view to your iPhone camera.

"Exposing your iPhone to high amplitude vibrations within certain frequency ranges, specifically those generated by high-power motorcycle engines, can degrade the performance of the camera system," the company said in a post on its support site.

The company says that you should not connect your phone to motorcycles with high-powered or high-volume engines as these vibrations are transmitted through the chassis and handlebars. Concerns about mopeds and scooters that have a small volume or electric engine are less likely, but you should use a shock absorber fitting that says "Avoid using it regularly for long periods of time."

The problem is with high-tech gyroscopes and magnet-based camera systems designed to compensate for moving shots. Systems such as optical image stabilization and close-loop autofocus automatically adjust for accidental movement of a picture.

"The OIS and closed-loop AF systems in iPhone are designed for durability,"

But "long-term exposure to amp resolution vibrations ... can degrade the performance of these systems and reduce image quality for photos and videos."
