According to reports, the release of iPad Pro models with OLED displays is progressing as planned and is expected to happen in 2024.
Apple's adoption of OLED technology has been slow and cautious, with only certain iPhone and Apple Watch models benefiting from its advantages. However, rumors suggest that both the iPad and MacBook will soon join the OLED bandwagon. According to a recent report from research firm Omdia, it seems that the iPad might be the first to incorporate OLED displays.
Specifically, Apple is said to be on track to introduce OLED technology to its 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models in 2024. Production of these models is expected to commence in the first quarter of the following year. Sources indicate that Apple plans to utilize low-temperature multi-crystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels, which are considered the pinnacle of current OLED technology. This suggests that Cupertino will likely opt for top-of-the-line OLED displays for its tablets, a logical choice for the Pro line. Apple has always placed a strong emphasis on the quality of its displays, and the current Mini LED LCD panels used in iPad Pro models already represent some of the best in the LCD realm.
Switching from the excellent Mini LED displays to OLED brings numerous benefits. OLED offers perfect blacks and per-pixel light control, resulting in exceptional contrast and HDR performance. Additionally, OLED panels are more power-efficient, and Apple may even attempt to achieve higher brightness levels. The LTPO technology incorporated in these displays enables dynamic refresh rate adjustment, leading to further power savings.
Unfortunately, the report also delivers some less favorable news. Contrary to previous rumors suggesting OLED panels for MacBook models by the end of 2024, the release is expected to be significantly delayed and now anticipated in 2027.
