Global technology brand HONOR presented at the Fortune Global Forum 2023 in Abu Dhabi. Why? To join the debate and outline the future of foldable smartphones. Dr. Ray Guo, CMO of HONOR Device Co. Ltd., joined the panelists for the discussion "The New Smart World: What's Next for Smart Devices," which also featured Ben Wood, Principal Analyst and CMO of CCS Insight, and Frank Holzmann, Global EVP of Electrical Services at TÜV Rheinland.
The panel discussion, moderated by Clay Chandler, Fortune Asia Executive Editor, covered a wide range of cutting-edge technology topics. Including foldable smartphones, human-centered display technology or artificial intelligence in devices.
Dr. Ray Guo, CMO of HONOR Device Co. Ltd, in his speech said among other things: “ The business world is entering an exciting new era and technology will play a central role in it. We believe that human-centered innovation will bring new possibilities to the next generation of smart devices. Foldable devices are becoming mainstream, artificial intelligence in devices is paving the way for an era of change and human-centric technology. Such as eye-comfort display technology, they improve the experience of interacting with a smart device. From our perspective, smart devices will continue in this direction. "
During the panel discussion, there were also observations regarding the further development of foldable smartphones. The parallel between foldable smartphones in the smartphone industry and electric cars in the automotive industry was interesting. Both of these cases disrupted their industries with bold new concepts meant to change things for the better. Likewise, the latest data shows that more than 64% of high-end smartphone users in China are open to switching to foldable devices. This suggests that we are at an inflection point where foldable smartphones are entering the mainstream.
Until recently, some of the fundamental pain points of foldable smartphones, namely portability, durability and battery life, have not been addressed. Now devices like the HONOR Magic V2 are as thin and light as regular flagship smartphones. And at the same time, they provide all the benefits of immersive folding screens. HONOR Magic V2 is tested to withstand at least 400,000 folds, which proves its great durability. And it features silicon-carbon battery technology for all-day battery life.
After solving these user pain points, HONOR recently achieved a significant milestone by producing 1 million foldable devices in its factory. HONOR Magic V2 is currently the best-selling foldable device in the Chinese market. And according to analyst firm Omdia, it holds a 25% share of the expanding foldable device market as a single model.
The increasing production shows how the HONOR brand is driving the supply chain forward in the industry and that the industry is maturing. Passing the milestone of 1 million units shows that the supply chain is entering the stage of mass production, where the production process is more automated and efficient. The entire industry will benefit from this. This will increase supply chain confidence and encourage other brands to innovate in the foldable phone space. This will then cause a reduction in the prices of folding smartphones and their even greater availability.
Another key topic of the panel discussion was human-centered technological innovation. Dr. Ray Guo said that for the HONOR brand, it means identifying the problems of real users and solving them.
Research shows that at least 2.2 billion people worldwide have vision impairment and that at least 1 billion of them could be prevented. Based on this research, display technology for eye comfort has become a top priority for HONOR. This is evidenced by the fact that the company has invested more than 140 million USD in research and development of display technologies. And it has developed over 500 imaging-related patents. Most recently, HONOR opened a specialized laboratory for eye comfort. So that she deepens her professional knowledge in this area. " We hope that thanks to this new laboratory we will create an oasis of eye comfort in the desert of visual defects, " said Dr. Ray Guo.
In line with this investment, the HONOR brand has debuted a number of innovative features for eye comfort, such as 3840Hz PWM dimming technology. Or the circadian night display function, which better protects users' eyes. These innovations gradually spread throughout the industry.
For example, since HONOR introduced high-frequency PWM dimming functions for eye comfort, 12 other smartphone brands have adopted the technology. Now in China, more than 90% of smartphone displays have eye comfort features like the aforementioned high-frequency PWM dimming.
Artificial intelligence was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated topics of discussion. The HONOR brand has been investing in AI for many years and debuted a platform that improves the smartphone user experience with AI services based on user intent. During the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit in October, HONOR announced that its upcoming HONOR Magic6 smartphone will feature On-device LLM powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform. HONOR believes in a hybrid AI model that uses in-device AI for personalized content and services. And at the same time, it ensures user privacy, while data remains on the device.
The HONOR brand is celebrating three years since its foundation. And its significant participation in the Fortune Global Forum shows that HONOR has grown into a global premium brand that is a leader in folding innovation and eye comfort technology.
The data suggests that this innovation is paying off. The brand has achieved almost a 200% increase in sales in overseas markets this year. As the latest report from Counterpoint Research shows , in Europe HONOR is the only brand among the five largest that grew year-on-year in the third quarter. In China, HONOR holds the top spot in both the folding device market and overall market share in Q3 2023, according to major industry analyst firms such as Counterpoint and IDC .
